Hanau battle map.
The Battle of Hanau was fought on Oct 30, 1813, between Wrede's Bavarian army and Napoleon's retreating Army. Following the French defeat at Leipzig, Napoleon retreated back to France. However, his army was intercepted by the Bavarians, who had switched sides when the war turned against the French Empire.
The Bavarian General von Wrede had served with Napoleon on many campaigns and was determined now to stop Napoleon from reaching France. Upon his deployment, Napoleon remarked, "I made him a count, but couldn't make him a general". Ultimately, the Imperial Guard was sent in to fight off the Bavarians, allowing Napoleon's battered army to reach the safety of France in preparation for an allied invasion the next year.
