The battle of Talavera was fought between the French and the Anglo-Spanish from july 27-28 1809. After Marshal Soult retreated from Portugal, British General Wellsey went on the offensive as part of a joint Anglo-Spanish offensive to take Madrid. The battle was mostly fought north of Talavera to seize strategic hills. Both sides suffered equal numbers of casualties. By the 28, the French retreated overnight, leaving the Allies in control of Talavera, but having no will to pursue. Aurther Wellsey was ennobled as Duke of Wellington for the action of that battle.
