Bailen battle map.

$6.75

Fought in July 1808 in Spain, the battle resulted from the Spanish uprising against French occupation. French general Dupont was caught off guard by the Spanish; his corps was encircled, and he surrendered.

Dupont commended the Spanish general Castainios, given that Dupont himself fought in 12 battles. Castainios responded that it is just as much a surprise to me, given this is my first battle.

Bailen was the first French defeat since Napoleon became emperor. It accelerated rebellions in Spain and motivated Austria to resume the war against France. Napoleon was fourius. "Has there ever, since the world began, been such stupid, cowardly, idiotic business as this?" General Castinios, who led the Spanish in the battle, would be given the title, Duke of Bailen.
