Namur was a fighting retreat of Grouchy french corp out of Belgium after the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo.
A detachment of French troops remained in Namur to keep the Prussians at bay.
Intense fighting swept through the town, causing mass devastation among the Prussians, but defeat was inevitable, and the rest of the French drew back overnight to France.
