The russian army's war with Napoleon first saw them failing to save their Austrian allies in 1805 and later, Prussia, in the bloody battles of Eulau and nearby Friedland. In ruins, the tsar made peace with Napoleon. 

However, when Russia refused to comply with France's continental blockade of Britain, Napoleon invaded Russia, which proved fatal to his empire. 

The Russians would spearhead the war against Napoleon in 1813, leading coalition armies throughout Western Europe and onto Paris itself.
