The Spanish fought as an uneasy ally of Napoleon's empire until the Emperor began intervening in Spanish affairs. A European backwater by the early 19th century, Napoleon's heavy-handed meddling in Spanish affairs to reform the kingdom triggered a national uprising (1808), prompting a switch of sides to join Britain and the larger coalition against the French Empire. 

Spain's military and generals were extremely incompetent, but the Spanish people were determined to see the French ousted from their land for good. With the help of Britain, drove the French out of Spain and into France itself by 1814.
